I think folks in the US need to recognize that it's no longer sufficient to appeal to supposed bedrock values because for right-wing yankees everything is on the table. You can't argue that something is bad because it's segregationist: that is a fairly popular position again, one that can be asserted openly. You can't argue that something is authoritarian: they want a doctator. You can't argue that something will infringe on free expression: right-wing yankees don't think there should be free expression. If your goal is to try to chip off some of the softer right-wing aligned folks, you need to argue why these things matter kind of from first principles.

I think this is some of the success of the Democratic messaging around Kilmar Garcia: they made this an unpopular issue for Trump by hammering how a lack of due process hurts everyone, not just by appealing to due process itself.
