Right then. A lovely little story.

When I travel, I tend to walk as much as I can (rather than train, bus, etc) as it is easier to absorb local culture. On one trip to Hong Kong, in a late afternoon I think, I had hauled myself up to a temple, not very big but very beautiful. I was exhausted from all the walking and it was very hot.

I went to go inside the temple, but got such a stern look from someone I took to be in charge, that I hesitated, had a look around from the doorway, and retreated. There were seats outside, amongst a lot of gentlemen playing majong (?), so I decided to have a short rest before walking back to the hotel.

A lovely older gentleman approached me and asked if there was anything wrong. He spoke good English. I said no, but mentioned that I felt that I couldn't go into the temple.

So he took me inside, and as we walked though the three major areas he explained everything to me. From memory it was a temple frequented over time by seagoing people.

I was so grateful, and he gave me his address, telling me his name was Jimmy.

We kept in touch periodically for quite a few years, sending a postcard or card with a little news, back and forth.

Eventually I didn't receive any replies, and I assumed he passed on/died.

One gentle kindness that meant a lot to this weary traveller.

I hope in all my sorting out of photos I find that photograph of him again, and of the temple.
