Simplex voice calls
Summary: Still broken, more even more annoying.
Details: after the latest big update, I haven't had a chance to try #simplex voice calls. This evening, I asked Sarah SoupBox [Zap.Cooking] (nprofile…cjzd) to help me out with a test call. First impressions were that the audio quality is improved noticeable and the connection speed was also vastly improved. Good. But that's where the good stuff stops.
The call dropped out for no apparent reason several times. When accepting a call you have to friggin unlock the app, which is really dumb. I don't want to have to manipulate the phone to accept a call. I want to bop the button on my head phones and accept it with no interference.
There is no "call connected" sound when the call finally connects and the only way to know is if you are looking at the screen for VERY small text that indicates that the call is connected. This is a much bigger deal to me than you might expect as I don't often have my phone within reach while at work and don't want to have to look at the phone to know when it is connected.
The disconnections are nearly always when moving. If I am in one spot, it is stable enough, but, even when I was walking on my normal walking route, the money of times I disconnected seems to be related to cell tower handoffs. I can't prove this, but, that is my suspicion. This makes driving while calling also untenable.
Messaging for small groups and directly with one other person is truly excellent.
I have not tested video calls as I tend to utterly detest them, but, I may at some point in the future as I would like to be able to recommend simplex over signal for family, but video calls between grandparents and grandchild need to work smoothly for this to even be considered.
So, it's better, but not good in some areas.
