I use popsicle sticks for “don’t dig here, new bulbs” and “dense clump, divide bulbs” and “bare patch, add bulbs”. Two sticks to bracket each spot. I just write on them with marker or grease pencil, none of them are meant to last more than a season.
Plus a calendar reminder in early summer to do it while the bulbs are dormant.
