I think it’s better to be descriptivist than prescriptivist with language.
Languages evolves.
I’ve given up on “quality” (high-quality or low?), “decimate” (reduced by 1/10), and “begging the question”.
These ships have sailed.
No one’s confused when people (mis)use these terms and pretending otherwise is just gatekeeping snobbery.
I’m not ready to give in on “calculus”, though. Describing any non–calculus-related decision as involving “calculus” comes off as extremely pompous.
