#TodayILearned that the ubiquitous VU meter measures RMS *voltage* (doubles every 6 dB) and not *power* (doubles every 3 dB), because its primary use is to calibrate levels between equipment in the processing or recording pipeline, and not driving loads like speakers.
I makes sense when you think about it—audio equipment clip based on voltage, not power. It just never occurred to me!
