The world’s oldest known boomerang was discovered in Poland, at a site called Obłazowa Cave, in the Carpathian Mountains, in 1960. This ancient boomerang, dating back over 20,000 years old, was carved from a mammoth tusk. Measuring roughly 71 centimeters (28 inches) in length, it is an incredible example of early human craftsmanship.
Unlike the typical Australian boomerangs, which are designed to return to the thrower, this prehistoric boomerang was likely used for hunting and did not have a returning design. Its aerodynamic shape allowed it to be thrown with great force and accuracy, making it an effective weapon for taking down prey from a distance. The find is significant because it shows that boomerangs, or similarly shaped throwing tools, were used far beyond Australia and much earlier than previously thought.
