A million times better than the awful stuff the various clouds do with slow HTTP and whatnot to provision systems at boot.
SMBIOS type 11 strings can be configured directly on the qemu cmdline for example (and on other hypervisors sometimes too). systemd can use them to set up system credentials (https://systemd.io/CREDENTIALS) this way, but uses it for other stuff too (for a list see: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/latest/smbios-type-11.html).
