from what I remember, they assumed that Columbus's planned expedition from Europe, across the Atlantic, to India, was a deathtrap because of the distance.
they had a rough idea how big the world is, and they didn't know just how vast the continents in the way were. they knew that there was some kind of landmass over here (probably), just not this big.
