LMAO, the bad guys in Firefly are a Chink/Anglo alliance. Compare that to the other suspicious similarities between Firefly and Outlaw Star, where the villains are chink magic pirates. And, you've got yourself more than a few parallels. I'd heard that Firefly borrowed heavily from Outlaw Start, but I never realized how much until looking into it.
