this is poor design. they should be powered off 120V with backup rechargeable battery that lasts 10 years when 120V power is on / 1 month when 120V power is off. and instead of making a nails on chalkboard beep it should say "replace smoke alarm battery" and say it in like 10 languages. truth be told i had a cricket in the basement once that sounded just like one of these generic beeps. i didn't smash anything with a hammer though.
