They're being killed by the Russian Federation in the Ukraine via hypersonic missile strikes on NATO command centers in the Ukraine. NATO is providing total covert assistance to the Ukrainian armed forces (similar to US 'advisors' in South Vietnam back in the 1960s)

However, NATO/France/the US cannor officially admit to their presence in the Ukraine as this is an act of war by NATO against the Russian military. Hence the kabuki theater.
