Passports amplify the notion that there is “us” and “them”.
“Us” are good
“Them” are bad
We are all “us”, we may not agree and we may even fight sometimes, but only fight somebody you’ve had a direct dispute with.
Don’t fight somebody, somebody else has had a dispute with and they try to tell you it’s “us” OR “them”.
