Predation. Sheep were brought over by spaniards on the same boats as the first cattle. They died out pretty quick.... panther, cougar, bobcat, yote and wolves weeding out everything that couldnt run or fight. Plus massive droughts which sheep couldnt handle.
We should have sheep now though, since all those problems are solved....
