To the extent that the police perform socially useful tasks, they’re not doing that for our benefit. They are “keeping the king’s peace,” ie, suppressing disruptions to a status quo that benefits capitalist elites.
The police do not care about “murder” in the abstract; they care about making sure that murders don’t become so disruptive that capitalism stops functioning efficiently for the owning class.
