The SD card is not damaged. The problem is that Android applies file-based encryption to some files (in my case, all my photos - but not others), and it does NOT decrypt them when I move them to my SD card (which I genuinely could not have expected, but oh well, it's on me for not testing)... Now that the phone has been wiped, I certainly can't read them anymore...
