the best thing I learned in college was "AI is the study of algorithms that don't work".
my prof meant something really specific by that: "algorithms" are something rigid and mathematical, not the pop culture robot brain we have in the media today. like making a spanning tree or sorting a list. "AI" is the bucket people put all sorts of things into when they can't be known to work and can't be rigidly defined. it's a catch-all for snake oil and that's been basically the term's purpose all along
