While comparable widely varying options exist on other free and open source platforms, an easier-than-you-may-think option exists on FreeBSD: update it yourself by editing a couple of files.

Packages, as you likely know, are built from Ports, in which the upstream code is fetched, twiddled and installed on FreeBSD. In many cases, updating a port to use a newer upstream release is as straightforward as updating the version in the Makefile and the filename and checksum in the distinfo.
