What the hell even happened here? Well, looking at Tamamo’s past matches, it’s actually pretty obvious – except for against Ryza, the fox girl had repeatedly displayed completely insane early-match strength, as the Fluffy Tail Mafia kept bringing the hammer down on Tamamo’s opponents. Because of that, Tamamo had been able to perform surreal feats of strength like Doubling Illya, pushing Pyra below 40%, and bringing 2B down to 44%. The only problem was that, against Samus, that utterly absurd level of power, that unstoppable monster strength…was only enough to enable Tamamo to temporarily go even with Samus. No, on second thought, not even that – Samus spent almost the entirety of those first 2 hours in the lead after all.
Because only the first 2 hours of the final were actually competitive, which to be fair, was still 2 hours more than I expected, and it made for a final that was at least briefly exciting. But once Tamamo ran out of steam against Samus, as she had against Illya, Pyra and 2B, she didn’t simply bleed lots of percentage points this time, the fox instead got turned into prey by the bounty hunter. Samus ended up quickly killing the match so completely that despite being the tournament final, it failed to break the tournament vote total record of 390 set during the Tamamo VS 2B quarterfinal match. Not that Samus cared, because she easily smashed Tamamo’s vote record of 200, getting 222 votes in a 24 hour match that she had all but won after 3 hours. One can only wonder just what kind of ludicrous numbers Samus would have been able to put up if she had actually been put under pressure throughout the entire match – surely 300 votes would be within the realm of possibility.
As for the actual final we got, Samus peaked at a 65 vote lead, before Tamamo managed to claw back some ground and make the end result more respectable, ensuring that she outperformed Momiji and Reimu, though Remilia’s 46% against Samus was far out of reach. Getting Samus down to 57% was ultimately the best Tamamo could manage. The fox girl had an amazing tournament run, repeatedly put up stunning performances and prevailed in the greatest match of the entire tournament. Against Samus however, she ultimately stood no chance. The best opportunity anyone had to take Samus down would have been way earlier, and seen some absolute beast of a girl sneaking up on her early in the tournament, before the Metroid fanbase was fully mobilized and alert to potential danger. And of course, that’s exactly what happened with the round 2 match against Remilia, and Samus STILL won comfortably. In truth, Samus won this tournament the moment she tripled Yuri in round 1, showing that she was just as beloved on Fedi as she is everywhere else.
