I did manual upgrades of Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and more. It was possible, but sometimes there were soo silly issues like Ubuntu from previous LTS to current LTS ALWAYS having a black background and the "replace Thunderbird with the snap" always failing.
Compare this with atomic desktops, even better #BluefinLTS or #HeliumOS that really are rock solid, and you can upgrade in biig leaps.
The only issue is syncing the /etc files with upstream.
