Every VPN is encrypted, this means that no one will be able to know what is traveling on the network between you and the VPN server and this implies safer browsing as it prevents attacks such as capturing access credentials. That's why it's so important to use VPN on free WiFi or even when using mobile data depending on the activity performed.
If a VPN is encrypted and no one can know what is being trafficked, it means that we can use it as a subterfuge to bypass censorship to content that interests us, after all there is no way to block a destination that is not known.
When we use a VPN we are asking another computer to do tasks for us, as a kind of power of attorney for someone to carry out actions on our behalf. This way we are protecting our identity and even against location by IP.
If the connection is encrypted and no one can see what is going on the network and there is another computer acting for us, we can say that we have a HIGH degree of anonymity. Digital anonymity is just as good as your safety browsing skills. If an individual uses a VPN to remain anonymous but accesses Gmail or Facebook account, said individual is no longer anonymous because once the company has identified you, other entities may also have access to your information.
You can hire a VPN service which is usually not cheap but also not expensive or build your own VPN in 10 minutes paying around 7 usd per month.
But VPN is no silver bullet when it comes to censorship. China, for example, is capable of making the use of VPN unfeasible, but that's a topic for another day.
