People don't like living in authoritarian families, home towns, or countries - unless they're the bullies at the top of the pyramid - and they leave them as soon as they can.
This is why the GOP focuses its entire legislative agenda, not on making things better, but on trapping people in literal or figurative prisons.
Without chains on our bodily sovereignty (abortion, transition), our minds (books we read), & our options re others' abuse (divorce, migration, rape laws) we'd just walk away.
