I met Philip Larkin in 1969 when I was 12. He was a friend of a schoolfriend's father, who had taken us both to a chamber recital at Hull University. I didn't realise how famous he was then. He was avuncular and interested that I was learning to play the viola. I remember his very shiny bald head.
