Went with one of the six-mini-screens clocks in the end.
The default font-set looks more like a nixie-tube than the ones here but is less readable from a distance. This one is readable without my glasses across the room and looks great.
The pre-supplied set of like anime cats or whatever don't obviously encode numbers and can barely be seen from a distance at all.
Started to ponder what custom images I could make. Something tentacled maybe.
