ATProtocol is too heavy. They've made a lot of good choices, and for certain use cases ATProtocol is the best way to go. There's a lot Nostr can learn from their architecture, if you look at the bare-bones protocol design. (So much misunderstanding here about what the bare-bones protocol is and does.)
But if you need lightness then it has to be Nostr. And for the use case I'm working on you need lightness.
