Tomato [boob enjoyer] (nprofile…gfl4) so, for christmas my dad bought me this lamp (see picture). we thought it was animated with the characters lighting up in the pattern of rain (as the matrix does) but as it turns out it just glows and slowly changes colors as a whole.
so we returned it. shortly after, my dad had asked me what i wanted instead, but i had decided to build my own "lamp": it's a computer monitor hooked up to a raspberry pi running a screensaver* of the matrix constantly. its form-factor isn't as pretty as an actual lamp, but the visual is certainly a magnitude better. it reminds me of a dynamic display you may see in a science museum, but smaller.
i have some concerns about the power consumption (i leave it running all the time) but i'm guessing it doesn't use much more than, say, a lamp. my led lamp is just as hot as the rpi is.
it's nice! i glance at it whenever i get up to go for a drink or whatever, so i think about it plenty. it's not distracting like having the display switch between all the screensavers available is. and it makes me feel like my life is one that actually deserves something nice, because "why else would you have something wasteful and vain like a cool matrix lamp in your house?"
