As March 9th draws to a close I'd like to remind everyone that it was the anniversary of the destruction of Tokyo at 12:08 am at the hands of the United States in 1945. The bombing lasted only three hours, but is regarded as the most destructive bombing in history, beating even the nukes. Civilians were specifically targeted leading many to consider this act a war crime for which no one will ever be punished. In the end 130,000 civilians were killed, and over one million rendered homeless with 267,171 buildings destroyed. Some estimates are much higher. The flames were so hot that the civilians who fled to bomb shelters were cooked to death, and the smoke made it difficult if not impossible to evacuate. At some point the pilots took aim at the bridge civilians were using to evacuate over the Sumida river, resulting in the death of hundreds on the bridge itself as well as trapping thousands of others with the conflagration to their backs. Even open fields were not safe, with the smoke suffocating all who managed to be lucky enough to avoid the bombs. The bombing only ceased when turbulence created by the flames became so intense that the safety of the pilots could no longer be guaranteed. Pilots reported having to wear masks that suppressed the stench of burning flesh. The emperor's palace was spared in order to humiliate him, forcing him to watch his city and his people burn, though the palace was eventually destroyed in a separate bombing in May.
The United States considered the bombing a "significant success" and were "pleased" with the results.
Similar bombings continued throughout March in other major cities, and only ended when the United States ran out of bombs.
After a series of other humiliations, the Emperor no longer believed victory was possible and Japan began the process of surrender in June. The United States had other plans, however.
