I've also worked in similar environments for years, but the specific workflow of modeling programs has always remained somewhat terrifying to me, even as I've used them to do UV unwrapping/mapping for years. you wind up in some weird place and it sets you back like an hour, and how you get out is usually kind of a mystery. and thats how my first (traumatic) experience with emacs was in undergrad when I thought I would just download it and do my homework with it.
