I agree, it certainly feels that way to me.
The axe over the head is a curious thing. We take quotes far too seriously. Offline we all express wildly differing opinions from one day to the next.
We suddenly started treating people online with the same consistency bias as political leaders who are trying to articulate a clear ideology.
People say silly stuff every day, it never used to mean those things are their core beliefs.
I think part of this stems from Twitter giving blue badges to journalists by default, and everyone then thinking and acting like a journalist to try and gain online influence.
These are entirely unpredictable and unintended consequences of seemingly far less important decisions than they later turned out to be.
