#WritersCoffeeClub Where do you get your books?
Personal Big 3 for books:
SmashWords
https://www.smashwords.com/ The ebooks come DRM-free and I was told by one indie author they (the author) get a greater share than on other platforms. I have had no complaints with the site as a buyer and highly recommend it.
Itch.io
https://itch.io/ Great for novels, TTRPG books, and games, also DRM-free. Community copies and bundles are pretty great, and the site seems to have made some improvements to the search function.
Kobo for tradpub books not available above, immediately DRM-stripped to make epub files that can I can read however I wish. I use #Calibre and the Obok plugin.
I also like to read advance copies and leave reviews when I see books that really speak to me. Free reading and helping out authors, two things I love in one package! I'm signed up to a couple of ARC review sites:
BookSirens
https://booksirens.com/ I have more experience with BookSirens and have reviewed a handful of books through them so far. I get a feed of books based on my preferred genres, and when I sign up to review an advance reader copy (ARC), after reading a sample of the first chapter which I've found very helpful, I can get it in DRM-free PDF or epub to read and review in a month or so.
The site doesn't have a huge selection in my preferred genres of non-fiction and historical fiction--fantasy and romance lovers will have many more choices--but I find the experience satisfactory and plan to keep reading & reviewing.
NetGalley
https://www.netgalley.com/ I signed up to this one much more recently and have yet to review my first ARC, though I'm reading through it. NetGalley's main advantage over BookSirens is the larger selection but its ARCs come with DRM, so reading requires a dedicated mobile app which significantly slows down reading for me. At least I'm not paying for the books 🤷 #amReading #bookstodon
