My little conspiracy theory about the attack in Moscow:

Putin was confirmed in office (in whatever way) so now he has to look ahead to the next 5 years. 5 years of further unsuccessful war in Ukraine would not make him look good and could possibly earn the resentment of the people and generals.

So: planned emergency exit.

An attack on the heart of Russia by IS shows the world that Russia is "part of the West." After the attack, Putin can gradually shift his military forces and actions to the Middle East in order to take action against IS there. At the same time, he is slowly withdrawing forces from Ukraine and hoping that the matter will somehow fizzle out.

With additional forces from “the West” he will wage war against IS and thus regain trust and access to the Western world. (A foiled attack on the US embassy in Moscow next week would be nice, right?)

How and in whose interest?

Somewhere in Syria there is a president with (potential) ties to IS who still has certain debts to Putin. This president and his country were readmitted to the Arab League last year without much fanfare.

Another member of the Arab League, Saudi Arabia, may be investing €450,000,000 in the next potential US president, who wants to use the sum to free himself from legal debts. With such a conservative "friend" in the White House, we ensure that the ~100,000,000 cars in the USA run on combustion engines for as long as possible, thereby keeping oil prices stable.

Result: Capitalism wins. Happy end.
