Yeah. Strictly speaking the transport is DDC2, which is I2C with some well known hardcoded addresses for stuff.
EDID is also how you discover if the connected display is in fact digital and wants you to stop all that DAC nonsense and output LVDS or TMDS digital signals (for DVI/HDMI/DP)
