I only know about "fediverse" because i heard about gnu social 14 years ago or whenever. Tried to run it a few times, never could get federation to work, but at some point "mastodon" surpassed 1mm users so i went looking. I still don't like the interface, (phanpy helps, so far), but i wouldn't have known about it at all otherwise - either i'm sheltered or they can't handle the signups so don't advertise.
same thing with Matrix - it's great, a real pain in the ass to set up...
