Here is my conjecture. Conjecture alert!
Detaining immigrants and attacking public education is about replacing the exploited foreign workers with exploited American (read: "white") workers. Attacking public health and science is about creating a constant parade of emergencies that can be used to justify more and more arrogation of powers to the supreme executive and his oligarchs. The path may be a great depression, and the destination is empire.
