I keep seeing breathless articles from journos about how vital they are with little in the way of supporting evidence. It's mostly special pleading now that Facebook is about to stop giving them free money (an entirely predictable and predicted outcome) and while I kinda agree public interest reporting is good they're not that great at explaining why.
