There is a powerful skill that takes most of us years to learn but can change lives if mastered: empathy.

Empathy can take many forms, like sharing in another's joy when they succeed at a task or their sorrow when tragedy befalls them. It can be consciously not bringing up triggering topics to someone sensitive to them or apologizing when you harmed them in some way. There are so many ways to express understanding of another's perspective or emotions that it can be difficult at times to know how to respond or act, especially in a stressful situation or a time sensitive one. We are born knowing to keep our best interests first but have to practice to know how to keep others' interests in mind as well. And it takes time turning singular empathetic acts into habitual good behavior. It is a change in mental processing that can be achieved in time.
