In the end, I think that science will have to adapt a taoist stance on the existence of god:
The Tao that can be told of is not the eternal Tao; The name that can be named is not the eternal name. The Nameless is the origin of Heaven and Earth; The Named is the mother of all things.
Science could still keep describing reality, but no matter how advanced a civilization gets it will be a perpetual beginning of the picture and never the end.
