if you've spent any time on the weird parts of the internet you might have found people talking about "dolls", usually in ways that are nonspecific. i'm here to help you learn all (a tiny amount informed from a single perspective) there is to know about "dolls".
(gonna just note right now that the word "usually" is going to be doing a lot of heavy lifting here)
are "dolls" a kink? obviously. but there's a lot more to it too. it's not just a kink, but the doll mindset maps so easily onto kink that kink is just the kind of think that usually acompanies dolls.
a doll has little to no agency in life. an example: a toy doll comes with certain clothes, and only certain clothes will properly fit on the toy doll. the toy doll works best in a limit set of situations, outside of which things just get weird and kinda sad. the same goes for the types of doll that walk and talk and cry. a doll might seem to prefer certain kinds of food, or clothing, or certain activities, but these preferences are usually a delineation beyond which problems occur for the doll. therefore it's best to think of dolls as "personalized"
dolls are usually queer, trans, autistic, feminine, techy, Internet Connected, extremely* traumatized, very submissive**, Not a Person, and just kinda fucking weird
*: to the point where normal people become alarmed at the amount of traumatic experiences a doll has had
**: to the point where it's usually quite easy to demand that the doll take a more dominant role
dolls are usually not powerless. they can endure all manner of unpleasant situations for shocking lengths of time and emerge relatively unscathed and unchanged. dolls are known to exhibit extreme amounts of willpower even in the absence of traditionally understood agency
dolls tend to be ruthlessly loyal to those who treat them favourably. this doesn't necessarily imply "respect" in the common understanding of the term, because normal people would "respect" a doll by incorrectly ascribing agency to it, which is a thing that causes problems for dolls. no. dolls are loyal to those that treat them like dolls and who understand that even without agency and with relatively limited potential, that dolls are still valuable and should be cherished.
some dolls are basically children but that's not my vibe so i can't tell you much more. what i can say is that i tend to act "immature" (i love pokémon and i'm a silly) but such behaviour favours me because Serious Human Adults are put off by it
all dolls are the shitposter of all time
dolls are beings of inertia. a doll that's doing fuck all is going to keep doing fuck all until someone picks it up and is all like "hey! doll! do this!" and sometimes that might change the doll's behaviour if the request is compelling, but not if carrying out the request carries a risk of self-destruction. dolls aren't stupid, dipshit. a doll can carry out the same task repeatedly for a long time, unless the doll is worn down. dolls that have strong habits of self-care have a lot of potential to act autonomously on behalf of their trusted handlers, and those that don't are best described to be waiting. waiting to be picked up and loved.
dolls are free.
