Also it's all too easy to blame *just* popularity (especially when people think that popularity = financial success, they're correlated but they absolutely aren't mutually inclusive) when trying to make sense of modern day devs' unapologetic laziness and incompetence. It's all part of a shitty vicious cycle and all parties should be blamed - but the people whose standards keep lowering faster than you can blink should take more than just a smack.
Take something like Pokémon. It's always been immensely popular and yet the most commercially successful entries are the ones people hate and laugh about. Despite everything Sword and Shield are the most commercially successful titles in the franchise. Take something like the transition from 2D to 3D (aka B2/W2 to X and Y) and just how painful it was. Precisely one year after B2/W2 people's standards went to shit and yet they outsold the original B/W.
Take Dark Souls 2 - nearly successful as Worst Souls 1 in terms of sales and yet it's considered the black sheep of the franchise because faggots weren't allowed to speedrun through the game with poise builds. Because they're fucking whiny redditors who can't enjoy anything anymore unless they can make it as trivial and as fast as possible.
