Everyone who knew anything, knew they were dead when they didn't come back into contact. The people topside did the right thing waiting, comms get lost that far down easily and only come back when you come up. They had nets that held ballast and disintegrated after so many hours. If it didn't come back up by the failsafes they were dead and, this was a publicity stunt for the guys that own the rovs.
Private submersibles are over now. They aren't gonna let people dive that deep anymore except for research and military
