Thyroid hormones have a HUGE impact on mental health and mood, they drive our whole metabolism basically (including our brain). Being hyperthyroid can be like mania, it can cause people to be overly optimistic and risk taking (and lead to psychosis), while being hypothyroid can lead to feeling depressed and both states can make one feel very anxious. In fact, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can be mis-diagnosed as panic attacks or mental illness (so much so that it's pretty routine at many institutions to test thyroid hormone levels during psychiatric intake). Our moods (as well as our appetite) are VERY influenced by thyroid hormones. Of course, bodies are systems so it's often about how things interact as well and not the individual components (for instance, estrogen and thyroid hormone levels influence each other and estrogen can block thyroid hormone uptake so it's best to stagger medications if you're on HRT and Synthroid and going through menopause requires adjusting thyroid medications). But all our different hormones work synergistically, and like vitamins and minerals can aid or block each other, and it's ultimately about finding a balance that works for us. But thyroid hormones have a massive influence on mood.
