Applied for a job this morning; their system asked for a "short application cover letter", so I wrote the following. Posting it here for posterity.

If you are a human reading this, hello! As a human working in Canada you'll know that the current job market doesn't leave much room for being choosy about employment and most of us are in "Mercenary" mode (see my blog post on the subject here: https://scalebright.ca/blog/2024-06-03-true-believers-and-mercenaries). Work is less about emotional fulfillment and more about survival. This very much applies to my seeking this role. Did I fall in love with this job when I read the posting? No, and I don't expect the posting's authors expect applicants to. I do however believe I will be able to complete the tasks assigned to me faster and at a higher level of quality than any other applicant and that COMPANY would be getting at minimum 1.5x their total employment cost back in value by hiring me.
