The Birka talk sounds super interesting! By accident we stumbled in to the old harbor in Ii (Ijo in swedish) on our way back from Uleåborg this summer. We were looking for somewhere to take a swim and an icecream but instead we found this charming small town that originally was a medieval market place. What struck me is that the whole place was structurally exactly like many viking age trading sites described, but with 19th century buildings instead of viking age ones.
