I don't like when people who have positions of authority do this, though. The reason is they did it to Barry Goldwater and, though Goldwater was a terrible candidate, the psychiatrists who did it were defaming him, plain and simple. They libeled him from a position of authority.

And he won his lawsuit, too.

That is why the professional society's rule against doing it is called the "Goldwater rule".
