Born #onthisday in 1655, Swiss mathematician Jacob Bernoulli discovered the famous constant e while studying continuous compound interest [3].

Bernoulli made many other signifiant advances in calculus and probability theory as well as proving that the harmonic series diverges in his 1689 Tractatus de seriebus infinitis [1].

Perhaps most important were Bernoulli's contributions to the field of probability, where among many other things he derived the first version of the law of large numbers [2].
