"A group of nearly 100 economists from across Europe has come out strongly against the European Commission’s efforts to water down key sustainability laws, warning that the rollback risks undermining both human rights and Europe’s clean industrial future.
In a joint statement published on Monday (19 May), they said the proposed changes to the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence and Reporting Directives would strip back climate and environmental protections in favour of short-term business interests.
The due diligence directive is "crucial and effective" step to force large companies to monitor and address human rights and environmental risks in their value chains, they write.
But the commission wants to limit those obligations to direct suppliers only, drop civil liability provisions for damages caused by companies, and water down rules on climate transition plans.
The legislation is also set to be discussed by member states at an upcoming council meeting in Brussels on Thursday, where the latest draft shows governments broadly backing the commission’s approach."
