New “Human-Centered AI Lab” at Oxford
The Human-Centered AI Lab (HAI Lab) is a new initiative at the University of Oxford that aims to “create a space for technologists and philosophers to collaborate on translating philosophical concepts into open-source software and AI systems, fostering a vibrant community for big-picture thinking about a future of AI that enhances human flourishing.” The HAI Lab’s director will be Philipp Koralus, a member of the philosophy faculty at Oxford who was recently made the inaugural McCord Professor of Philosophy and AI there. The lab is funded by the Cosmos Institute, which was founded by AI entrepreneur and “avid student of philosophy” Brendan McCord. The Cosmos Institute states on its mission page: We envision a society where technology enhances reason, decentralization, and human autonomy, empowering individuals to reach their full potential. Current trends, however, point away from this future. We are bridging philosophy and technology through the “philosophy-to-code” paradigm. As the effectiveness of this approach gains recognition, it inspires a movement that reshapes AI development and governance. Rather than controlling people from the top down and diminishing human potential, AI becomes
a tool for consistently expanding human freedom and excellence from the bottom up. Echoing some of that language, a press release from Oxford states that the HAI Lab “will bring together leading philosophers and AI practitioners to embed concepts such as reason, decentralisation, and human autonomy into the AI technologies that are shaping our world.” In the same document, Professor Koralus says, “We aim to cultivate a new class of philosopher-technologists.” The HAI Lab will initially be a part of Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI (launched in 2020), which in turn is part of the Faculty of Philosophy. Next year it will become a part of the forthcoming Stephen A. Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities at Oxford (previously).
