Have you tried Angband? It is a later version of Umoria. Dungeon crawler rogue like game based on LOTR/Silmarillion. ASCII characters represent the different things in the dungeon (walls, floor, loot, monsters, etc). Initially released in 1990. I fobs myself going back to it over and over.
