Hodl bitcoin onchain and want to confirm your own transactions? Believe in the network and decentralization? Run a bitcoin node. Super easy and the only real investment is a decent sized SSD.

Use lightning a lot for large amounts? Want maximum control and privacy of your lightning wallet? Then try a lightning node. More options and a little more complicated than a regular node to setup but not extremely complicated. The difficulty comes from managing channel liquidity constantly, not something that you can just set and forget. Also tend to spend a lot in fees opening and closing channels so may cost more than it’s worth to run.
