It's because people think the liquid needs to be red to attract them.
Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, which is why most feeders have that color.
I believe they can small the sugar solution, and find it just as easily from flying by when the temps are up.
When the public quits buying the dyed solution, the companies will quit selling it.
